FOUR MONTHS LATER

LILY

My grandmother, when I was growing up, would tell me about how some people are touched. They could be touched by fate, good luck and fortune, love or something more twisted. What she never told me was sometimes a person could be touched by all of them.

I figure it’s the only explanation as to the life I’m living now.

I was touched by fate when my father decided to take me to the meeting with Constantino because it changed my entire life. Now, I know it was in the best of ways with one exception.

Could Constantino not killed my father to get to where we are? I’m not sure, but I won’t get the chance to find out. He wasn’t an awful man and I’m not so jaded not to feel anything. I do. I miss him, but I also know what my husband reminded me of, when I held his life in my hands, was also true—my father would have found a way to use me eventually.

I’m sure he would have wrapped it up in doing what is best for me, keeping me safe. It wouldn’t necessarily have been a lie, but he wouldn’t have cared as much about my happiness. For him, safe and successful were much more important than finding bliss.

He wasn’t touched by love after my mother died. I think part of him died then too. I can empathize because I don’t know what I would do without Constantino in my life. His obsession might not be love to some, but for us it works.

I think that’s where being touched by something a little darker comes into play. I rebelled against it for so long, not wanting to be my father, but the truth is I’ve always had it inside of me. I might not have been able to take Constantino’s life, even by giving the go ahead, but I would not hesitate if someone was threatening my family.

I wouldn’t be able to bear if something happened to any of them, which includes men I consider my brothers now. Luca is so filled with life that it’s hard not to get to know him. Maybe it has something to do with his medical struggles and the way he’s embraced a future of being healthy. It must be. I’m sure the love he’s found doesn’t hurt.

Then there’s Lorenzo and how he fits into the family now.

Elio is the hardest to get to know, but I have a feeling his time is coming to be touched by love like others have been.

I know I have been touched by love. It’s the thing which brings me my greatest joy, makes me grounded and awakens the sinister thing inside of me and gives it a playground to explore.

Strong arms wrap around me as I gaze out of the windows of the cabin we’re staying in for a little getaway. Christmas is a few weeks away still and this year I have so much to celebrate and more family to enjoy it with than I’ve ever had before.
